'Don't Make Me Think' Text Proof - Page 1
Chapter #1 – ‘Don’t make me think!’
When browsing my web page, you’ll notice that everything is quite simple and easily understandable for the average user. All of the links are self-explanatory and, in addition to that, they look like links. Thanks to this, the user can easily identify where they are on the page. The user will never be more two or three easy clicks away from the content that they want so a search bar really isn’t necessary.
Chapter #2 – ‘How we really use the web.’
In terms of web scannability, I’ve tried to follow it as much as possible. In the lengthiest portions of text on my site, generally the Alertbox summaries, I try and use bulleted and numbered lists so that the main ideas can be more quickly grasped. Unfortunately, I didn’t make much of an effort to bold, italicize, and/or highlight any of my words. My English teachers ingrained into me that I shouldn’t do that in my writing, and I tend to edge away from it. As I stated in the last chapter, my links are fairly simple and straightforward, therefore I have no need to ‘satisfice’ my users, as the book puts it.
Chapter #3 – ‘Billboard Design 101’
In an effort to make this paper scannable, I’m going to use a bulleted list for this chapter:
- Create a clear visual hierarchy
- Prominence – Although I avoided the <h1> element because I found it too big, I did use the <h2> and <h3> elements in concert to indicate prominence in the page’s structure.
- Related Logically = Related Visually – I grouped the links leading to similar content together and made them look alike.
- Nested – Didn’t use any of these…
- Conventions
- Whenever I used a heading, it usually said or summarize what was to follow underneath it.
- Pages Broken Up
- Using the style sheet to add attributes to headings, I broke up the pages into fairly clearly defined areas.
- Clickable
- If it’s clickable, it looks like a traditional link.
- Noise
- There isn’t any.
Chapter #4 – ‘Animal, vegetable, or mineral’
My clicks are straight-forward and thought-free, and everything’s about two or three links from each other.
Chapter #5 – ‘Omit Needless Words’
To the best of my current ability, everything on this site has been written to facilitate web scannability on the part of the user.
